Here are some tips to make before it gets too cold for your home.
For starters, identify your home’s freezing points. Check around the exterior and the interior of your home for pipes in areas exposed to the cold and that could experience freezing. Places such as crawl spaces, basements, garages and exterior walls.
Ensure your sprinkler or irrigation system is shut off and drained fully. The same goes for any pipes that lead to an outdoor faucet.
Protect your pipes, in areas where the pipe is going to be exposed to cold air constantly, wrap the pipe in insulation.
Before you go to bed, if the temperature is forecasted to dip below freezing, turn on a faucet with pipes running along an exterior wall for a slow drip. This keeps the water flowing, which reduces the risk of freezing. It also protects against burst pipes if the water does freeze, because it prevents pressure from building up between the faucet and an ice formation.
Open your cabinet(s) under your sink allow the warm air to flow to help prevent freezing.
Seal off your crawl space with heavy duty plastic wrap and don't forget the vents.
Your water heater should be flushed on an annual basis, and fall is the perfect time to do so. By flushing your system, you’re able to remove any sediment build-up, which allows your system to operate more efficiently and allows you to save money on your energy bills. Flushing your water heater can be a complicated task, so it’s best to call on a professional.
